Making Flossing Fun for Kids

Last week we looked at ways to make brushing fun for kids, but what about flossing? A lot of our patients admit that flossing is just one of those things that no one ever talked to them about so its just not habit enough for them to be doing daily.

Flossing itself is a skill that requires a lot more dexterity than brushing so starting young ensures that as adults, your kids will feel that this is part of their daily oral care routine and will hopefully ensure that they can “Live Mouth Smart”. Here are some fun and easy activities to teach your kids how to floss. As always, for more information visit our website at www.agdentalcare.com.au or come in and talk to our friendly staff.

Mega Blocks Mouth:- For this you will need a mega blocks unit that is around 4 blocks long, some playdoh and some wool. Place chunks of playdough in between the blocks and have your child use the floss to remove the playdough.

Sing a Song to the tune of their favourite nursery rhyme. How about this one to the tune of Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall. Floss your teeth everyday. Floss your teeth to clean plaque away. In between teeth and under your gums. We’ll have clean teeth and have lots of fun

Peanut Butter-Rubber Gloves Game – A slightly more messy, but effective way of showing kids why brushing alone is not enough to clean your teeth. Wearing a rubber glove smeared with a small amount of peanut butter, get your kids to see how much of the peanut butter they can remove with a toothbrush and floss. Keep your fingers tight together so they understand that you can’t brush the peanut butter from between your fingers but rather have to use to floss to completely clean them. You can then explain why you can’t completely clean your teeth by just brushing as a brush can’t get to the food stuck in between your teeth.

When combined with regular dental visits and a balanced diet, these flossing activities will help give your child a lifetime of healthy habits.
